It sounds like you have no connection to the internet. To check launch Firefox and see if you can connect to a website. Otherwise it could be a firewall problem. However you have managed to post to the forum so maybe you already have internet access?

I get the same message at work when I forget to put my password into the proxy server web-filter.

Thanks. Unfortunately I do have access to the internet and I do not have any password for the proxy but thanks for your reply.

Update:

I've chaged the server as well in the hope of getting better results but to no avail, it is still not working. (many thanks to the Ubuntu senior staff member who suggested this)

Thanks

What's the output of this command from a terminal?

ping -c 3 www.yahoo.com

Then it's got to be the proxy.

Unfortunately I am not using a proxy server, I have a direct internet connection.
It looks like there isn't much to do...well, thanks anyway for your help.

What is the content of your /etc/hosts file?

For username max you should have something like this:

127.0.0.1 localhost
127.0.1.1 max-desktop

# The following lines are desirable for IPv6 capable hosts
::1 ip6-localhost ip6-loopback
fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts

You obviously have internet access.
Do you have a firewall enabled such as guarddog, which may be incorrectly setup?

I assume that you are using Update Manager in 8.10?
Try using Synaptic Package Manager instead and see if the problem persists.

Also have a look at the last post on this thread.
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=994051

Make sure all your repositories are enabled in Synaptic:
Settings > Repositories > Ubuntu Software
Ditto > Third Party Software
Ditto > Updates
Ditto > Authentication (3 keys should be entered there)

Click on Reload after making any changes.

Might this still be a problem with tables the internal firewall that Ubuntu has. In installing firestarter, there was documentation that I read that said that firestarter changes the tables in its configs.....could this be an instance of the tables (i cannot remember the "tables" exact name) being changed so that it is not allowed to access some port?

I have finally sorted out the problem. I believe it was a program I installed yesterday called "anon-proxy" and that after removal allowed me to update from synaptic, now everything works perfectly.

Thanks to this wonderful forum and for all your help.
