View Full Version : [ubuntu] Error while resizing partition

I am trying to install Ubuntu Hardy dual booted with WindowsXP Home. I chose Guided partitioning and gave Windows 70% of space and Ubuntu 30%. I have an 80GB hard drive. Once I hit forward, it said that it has to write the changes to the disk and resize the partition. I got this error message while it was in the middle of this operation:

An error occurred while writing the changes to the storage devices.

The resize operation has been aborted.

How do I install Ubuntu with WindowsXP? I have done this before nearly 5 months ago, but its not going too well now.

Edit [I am installing Ubuntu 8.04.1 LTS Desktop Edition from a live CD]

Boot into windows and run defrag/error check (https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WindowsDualBoot#Beginning%20Ubuntu%20Installation) a couple of times.

You could also try temporarily disabling hibernation file and other stuff as explained here (http://www.linuxdevcenter.com/pub/a/linux/2006/05/08/dual-boot-laptop.html).

hope that helps

Thanks for your reply :)

I had previously ran a disk defragmenter before I attempted the Linux install. I am currently looking over that link you gave me. I still am unable to install Linux. I don't see why I am getting problems now, but I have done three Ubuntu installs in the past, but its not working on my machine. I had Ubuntu installed on this computer once before, and I decided I wanted it back. I installed it around four months before Hardy came out, and I upgraded to Hardy. Around one month later, I took Ubuntu off and went with Windows again. Could it be that there was some sort of error when I took Ubuntu off? I didn't notice any, but is it possible that it may have damaged my drive?
