I got into Linux with Hardy Heron so I started with 2.6.24-xx

Now I'm up to 2.6.27-10 so looking forward to getting to level 3.1....

Anyone started with 1.xx ??

2.2! My first foray into the Linux worlds was with Debian 2.2 (Potato).

What a learning curve. To get USB you had to compile your own kernel modules and I was total noob so it rarely worked. I am so glad that there are so many talented and dedicated people in hte Linux community to do the heavy lifting so it can be so easy for the rest of us.

My hat's off to them!

I don't think there will be a 3.x.x anything.

If so it will be something totally different than we have now, like a hybrid of the UNIX kernel and some GNU stuff on top.

2.4.18 with Mandrake linux 8.2 (2002). No OpenOffice, no firefox, but Linux was already pretty easy to install, and very exciting.. I remember using KDE 2, mozilla and koffice on a Pentium 2 with 64Mb memory. It was painfully slow, but ok once I upgraded to 128 Mb. :)

I saw a explanation of the version numbering scheme.

3.x.x.x - Linus has gone mad and rewritten the kernel as a microkernel.

What really?

What really?

Almost:

- 2.6.<even>: even at all levels, aim for having had minimally intrusive patches leading up to it (timeframe: a week or two)

with the odd numbers going like:

- 2.6.<odd>: still a stable kernel, but accept bigger changes leading up to it (timeframe: a month or two).
- 2.<odd>.x: aim for big changes that may destabilize the kernel for several releases (timeframe: a year or two)
- <odd>.x.x: Linus went crazy, broke absolutely _everything_, and rewrote the kernel to be a microkernel using a special message-passing version of Visual Basic. (timeframe: "we expect that he will be released from the mental institution in a decade or two").
