blank screen after 8.04 upgrade

I tried to upgrade to 8.04 on my Dell Inspirion 5100 and encountered a problem. The first time I booted up after the upgrade it told me to run fsck manually, which I did. A bunch of 'repairs' were made. I then could boot up and log in but after log in I get only a blank screen. Any ideas?
