Black Friday is (any) Friday the 13th

Thats why it's called Black Friday. Where in the world can it possibly be Friday the 13th at the moment ?

Mayan Calender I presume ?

I scored some good deals on memory at Newegg, although I bought them through the pre-Thanksgiving sale. They have some good stuff over there today though, like 1 TB WD drives for $94.

I'm pretty sure today has to do with like...Sales or stock I suppose or something like that 'cause everything has drop dramatically in price so everyone buys stuff to make stocks go up suppose. I don't know...Anyway, it's called black friday 'cause everyone goes out and buys crap that's on sale.

Not to kick the definition thing to death, but here's the full explanation of the term "Black Friday" here in the U.S.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Black_Friday_(shopping)

Edit:

Well, that's the correct link, but it doesn't seem to want to work. As an alternative, just search "black friday" in Wikepedia, and you'll see the full article. Very interesting...

No way am I going shopping today. The big box stores are going to be absolute ZOOS. Also, from past experience, the things that are marked down are things that are already overstocked or outdated items. You won't find too many deals on the "must have" or "hot" items this holiday season. In fact, you will see price INCREASES on many of these items.

Solution, avoid brick and mortar and shop online and price hunt just like you normally would. I've watched several DSLR cameras that I've been wanting for many months, actually increase in price the closer we get to Christmas.

IMO, black friday == scam.

Example:

Big Box store price on: Big name HDTV 42" (say $700) July 2008

Box Box store price near Christmas: Big name HDTV 42" ($800) November 2008 But wait! Black Friday price marked down to $700! Woo! What a deal!

lulz, good luck with your shopping

Why is the day after Thanksgiving called "Black Friday"?

It's a simple answer. Before the holiday season, most store chains are at a loss - selling in the "red". Despite the seemingly lower prices and abundance of deals, the massive sales achieved on the day after Thanksgiving actually bring chains out of the red and into the "black". Hence, "Black Friday".

And now you know!

Didn't go shopping. Tried it last year while I was in Minnesota with the rest of my family, didn't go well. Not doing it again.

I got a 640 GB external hard drive for $69 and a laptop cooler than runs off of USB for $9.99 at Staples. I hardly spent anything this year.

I noticed less people waiting in line outside (waiting for it to open up) at Staples than last year.

I got a Fedora 10 i386 installer for $0 F/S and an OpenSUSE 11.1RC1 installer free with it, too.

I guess that's not the question, but anyway ;-)

I was sown visiting my parents and they picked up a Compaq Presario desktop with monitor for $440 at officemax. It's avtually a pretty good computer for that price.

Me, I avoid black friday sales, I don't care how much money I can save on items, I'd rather shop around or pay more at a different time. Black Friday (Holidays in general) can bring out the worst in people. Nothing like a 1,000+ people trampling people down to get to a limited number of a certain item. I used to work for a store on black friday a guy actually had a heart attack and died in the store and people just walk over him and raided his shopping cart. Opps! sorry about this negative rant!

With some rare exceptions, this sounds like a completely normal sale to me except it's planted the day after US Thanksgiving, which should really give people all the more reason not to bother since they just spent the last night eating boatloads of turkey or something.
So, err, what gives?

Anyway, I downloaded wmhdplop and swallow-applet today for free. Quite cool software :)

Christmas only being a month away (people like to get stuff for Christmas), combined with what are typically blowout prices compared to the rest of the year, create an extremely competitive shopping environment.

Stayed at home. Didn't need anything, couldn't afford anything, and didn't want to risk being trampled to death like this poor Wal-Mart temp (http://www.cnn.com/2008/US/11/28/black.friday.violence/index.html).

No, I stayed at home and enjoyed good food and beautiful, sunny and clear weather. Was even out and about in shorts and a t-shirt! Yay!
