View Full Version : Do you think tags are pointless?

Now i know tags are supposed to be the first step to a semantic web but, ask yourself, has a tag ever benefited you? Most of the time tags are full of rubbish.
For example:
http://www.synlube.com/images/Skoda_Favorit_135_SL_-_1988.jpg
Tags (in a perfect world) for this should be:
skoda, 1988 SKODA Favorit 135 LS, car, automobile
In reality they would be:
pile of crap, OMG, rustbucket, n00b car, orgy
So i ask you, should we give up on tags?

Can you search on tags ? The forum search engine is poor enough as it is. I use Google instead as pile of **** would be chucked out as it can't find 'of'. What's the use apart from taking up server space ? No bin them now...

How do you get orgy from that??!
Wait, I don't want to know.

The only tags I care about are mp3 tags.

The person tagging the photo was looking for someone like you to see the tag, and respond just as you have.

It depends on the implementation. I personally feel Delicious (http://delicious.com/) is a great example of tags working well.
On the other extreme; Slashdot (http://slashdot.org/) is an example of them not doing a whole lot ;)

Ahhhh. How unwise of me. So I suppose for maximum exposure to the scum of the internet we should start putting questionable tags on not-very-questionable material.

Oh yeah! Its a conspiracy lol (note sarcasm).
Seriously though. Its just human nature to do things like this. I mean look at public toilets for instance, Moronic scribbling covering the walls (and worse). This is why (IMO) tags can't and will never work.

I find tags quite useful here on ubuntuforums.org, but if I told you why I'd have to set a grue on you.

Is pointless = great?
Pointless = useless
The title for the poll was going to be are tags useful but by mistake i typed pointless. Which makes it a bit confusing.
Now i cant edit the poll title. :(
Unless a mod can do it for me?

a bit confusing
I'd agree here.
I do not think that the tags in this forum will become all that useful. Keywording, indexing and otherwise cross-referencing texts is demanding work which takes ages and ages to learn.

Tags would be great for mp3s but they aren't (or properly) implemented.
Here is an idea to get it into Rhythmbox but hasn't gone anywhere as usual.

Tags would also be great for images if there was a uniform standard all image applications can use and read from.
For me tags are great if all programs can access them.

I am madly in love with Firefox tags, it is so much easier to find bookmarks by referencing them with words which describe its content rather than some arbitrary URL. I haven't used tags much outside of Firefox mostly due to missing tool support or support being awkwardly implemented.
