The situation is this:
I'm trying to connect my monitor as a secondary display for my notebook. The notebook has a 12,1" screen with a 1280*800 native resolution. It's using the Intel GMA 900 integrated graphics chip, external screen output via VGA.
I'm trying to connect it with the Samsung SM 2232BW display (1680*1050 native resolution) via the analog input (the digital is used by my main computer).
I can get the desktop to display, but the Samsung's resolution is not in the options (the biggest I can pick is 1600*1024, and that garbles the picture). Is there a simple way to add the resolution to the xorg.conf without messing up the notebook's display?
Also, I'd like to be able to run it through a KVM switch (many computers on my desk). Would that mess up the display detection? Could that even work?
