View Full Version : Which timezone are you from?

November 25th, 2008, 06:43 PM
Hey everyone. I've always been curious to know how "24/7" the forums really are. So this is a chance to see what time everyone is from. You can see this phenomenon in the bump thread; depending on what time it is, and how much time people have.

As internationalisations goes, GMT is the relative point where all the other zones are based off, so lets go from there. East is GMT+ and West is GMT-, then append the hours afterwards.

ex: Im from GMT-5 (US Eastern Standard Time) so pick the -5,-4,-3 option

Of course you don't have to specifically tell where you're from. If you like, just vote in the poll and go about your business.

Again this is just for fun...and I hope you have fun.

See this if you're not sure where you would stand
http://wwp.greenwichmeantime.com/info/timezone.htm

Notes:
Since there is more time zones than poll options, some are grouped to regional location, so bear with me.

The :30 intervals will just have to stick with their respective hour intervals
Ex: GMT+8:30 will be grouped with GMT+8, etc.

Also, there are some non-standard zones: GMT+13 and GMT+14; which will be grouped with the GMT+12 zone.

Thanks for playing

EDIT: eternalnewbee (http://ubuntuforums.org/member.php?u=612361) had a dream "Instead of a poll graph use a map with borders, and click on your time zone or country. That would be your vote." Unfortunately, the forums wouldnt let us do that. So xpod (http://ubuntuforums.org/member.php?u=140634) gave us a link to see how that may have looked like: HERE (http://www.flippinsweetdude.com/maps/index.php)
(warning, that page takes MASSIVE resources to render that Google Map. You're browser may crash in the process. If not, then enjoy)

GMT in the lead ... for about 5 mins probably. That might make sense considering populations.

I'm not sure how east coast (or west or central for that matter) of US compares with GMT +1 +2 countries (UK, France, Portugal, Spain, South Africa, etc.) in terms of total population. Probably comparable.

Americans generally do not use GMT or UTC and to most it might appear Greek, similair to the 24 hour clock or what they call military time.

They generally use,
EST or Eastern Standard Time Zone
CST or Central Standard Time Zone
MST or Mountain Standard Time Zone
PST or Pacific Standard Time Zone
Alaska Standard Time Zone or AKST
Hawaii-Aleutian Standard Time Zone or HAST

i know, i tried to plan it as accurately as possible, taking surface area into consideration more than population density. This is just a generalised poll anyway. No political campaigns involved here. I just wanted to see which time-zones are active the most.

cool. we gots people from [almost] everywhere now. It seem like more people from the GMT0, +1, +2 area are the most active...very active. Maybe even too active...hmmm

anyway, i wish there was a better way to make and implement this poll. I just wanted to see where the most people will report from, and it seems like everyone knows who is teh wnrz. (with more than half the vote, yikes)

Now you should get a basic idea where most of the forum members are from...and when to ask a question so more people can get to you (i just thought of that. Not a bad idea)

Anyway, i'll just let the poll run its course, see how long before it becomes extinct. In the meantime, enjoy your...morning/eavening/day/night

peace!

Hmm, if you imagine the chart rotated counterclockwise 90 degrees and laid across a map of the world, you'll notice that the userbase is roughly proportional to the land area of the developed nations. Except for Europe, which is extraordinarily high.

I hadn't thought about it before, but I guess it makes sense that Europe would be more inclined to use linux, after all, Windows and Apple ARE American companies.

Summer time now here in Australia, so that would be +11GMT, or AEDST (Australian Eastern Daylight Savings Time).

Ironically, Queensland, which is the northern most state on the Australian Eastern Seaboard, does NOT recognise Daylight Savings Time, as a whole, but the southern most region of Queensland (Coolangatta) does as it keeps it in line, time wise, with the northern most region (Tweed Heads) of New South Wales.

So, with that, Victoria, Tasmania, New South Wales and the ACT are all on the same time, with Queensland 1 hour behind, South Australia and the NT 1.5 hours behind, and Western Australia 3 hours behind.

They have only recently changed to a + time zone as well. They did so as to fall in line with their other Pacific Ocean neighbours, but mostly as they do a bit of trade with Noo Zillan, so rather than be a full day behind, they bit the bullet and lost a full 24 hours.
