Yeah, I find it significantly faster than 3.0 (in page loading).

As fast as Google Chrome, if not faster.

OK, thanks. I didn't realize FF had only version numbers, but also names, like Ubuntu...

Eclipse.

Minefield is just the name for the firefox trunk.

Tried it. Hated it.

They have removed the close tab from the first tab, added a new tab button on the tab bar, and removed my ability to have a new tab button on the toolbar.

Change for change sake, and I hate it. Removing the ability to put a new tab button on the toolbar is ridiculous.

For one, if you don't want to show the tab bar if you have just one tab open, you have now lost the ability to open a new tab via a button. You'll need to use a keyboard shortcut or right click.

They have removed functionality without providing a benefit to ANYONE else. It didn't make anyone's lives easier not having the option to drag a new tab button to the toolbar, and it just irritated people like me.

Stupid.

WHAT!??! I must have that new tab button on my toolbar. It's extremely convenient. How could they take this away? :(

Click it if your scroll wheel.

I dunno but my "new tab" button is still there.

Again, I still have that option. It's probably just a config setting. Chill out ;)

You have a new tab button on the toolbar with Firefox 3.1 beta? How exactly? That feature has been deliberately removed, and there has bee much complaining. It's not a config setting either, as someone has specifically made an extension for the beta to get the new tab toolbar button back.

I think someone's fibbing.....

EDIT: You've just uploaded a photo, and I don't see a new tab button on the toolbar in that photo? :/

It's on the right (on the tab bar - it looks like a mini tab with a star).

And it sucks that you suggest I am faking it... I have been here almost 3 years and I am participating in a few open source projects as a tester and trac maintainer.

I have one.

Anyways, posting this from FF3.1b
I won't use it until Vimperator is compatible, and I can't see any noticeable speed differences because our school's network is so ******* slow.

I think there is some confusion here. You're both supporting what i'm saying.

In Firefox 3.0 and all previous versions, you could have a new tab button on the TOOLBAR. This is something many people used, and it has now been REMOVED for Firefox 3.1

Instead, there is a small new tab button on the TAB BAR only, which is of course hidden if you don't have the TAB BAR shown with just one tab.

You misunderstand him. He wants a new tab button on the toolbar. Yours is on the tab bar; he already has one there, but it isn't visible unless the tab bar is.

Oh, don't care, I use ctrl T and ctrl W and alt arrow keys anyway.... doesnt everyone?:)

Ah right... I always use ctrl+t and if I am click happy the small button on the tab bar. I always use tabs, even with one window open, so for me it was never a problem.

I don't really care much about the buttons, I just want a browser that's really really fast, and this browser version is.

Try this:
1. View -> Toolbars -> Customise
2. Drag new tab button to toolbar. Et voila, if that works. It might.

I've been running it for a while. IMO, still too much bloat for a web browser, but it does seem to be a bit faster, but definately showing signs of being beta. Sites that require firefox, do not see it as firefox, yet...

I like it, seems pretty fast, will we be updated to 3.1 through the repos?

Does seem to feel a tad faster. However that could just be the placebo effect. *shrug*

And toupeiro, what less do you want? Of the browsers that companies actually recognize and code for your choices for lean browsers are Opera and Firefox. Opera is closed source so a non-starter for most people who run Linux. That leaves Firefox. Opera's been roughly 10Mb smaller than FF on my machine. However that 10Mb could be attributed to the 4-5 addons for which wins me to the FF camp.

Are there smaller browsers out there? Sure. Would I consider them usable in today's climate? Hell no. The days of 16Mb machines and 1-2Mb browsers are a decade past my friend.

Download, extract, and double click the file in the folder named firefox, and have it run in terminal.

i'm quite pleased with it so far. According to Gnome System monitor, it cuts my memory usage approximately in half.

Follow-up comment:

Just noticed it's not handling font rendering quite right. Anybody have a clue about that?

Could someone please tell me how to make a shortcut for this beta version, now I do have to start from terminal. Could I allocate a different icon for this version? TIA.

Never mind, I have created the shortcut by adding a new item in "Edit Menus".

Yeah, if you extract the folder in your /home directory then the shortcut will be simply:

~/firefox/firefox

or You can put in System->Preferences->Prefered Applications->Web Browser->Custom->/where_You_have-extracted_it/firefox and have it on Your favourite shortcut key ... :)

try nightly (http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/firefox-3.2a1pre.en-US.linux-x86_64.tar.bz2 (http://http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/firefox-3.2a1pre.en-US.linux-x86_64.tar.bz2)) , its even faster ... :)

yeah, You're right. sorry ... I was single-minded ... ;)

Update:

I've stumbled upon the sites ( http://benjamin.smedbergs.us/blog/2008-12-18/nightly-testers-needed-for-mozilla-central/ and http://benjamin.smedbergs.us/blog/tag/shiretoko/ ) that explained to me what version of FF I'm running. i.e. there are two branches of nightly: a Minefield branch that is totally experimental and is, after this branch, leading toward FF3.2 and on, and a Shiretoko (or 1.9.1 for Gecko) branch that is more stable and leading toward FF 3.1. mind that explanation about how to recognize what version are You running from the title of Your FF window is not correct. In Shiretoko it says: Shiretoko. I've forgot what it says on Minefield, ... all of You that have been using FF dl-ed before Nov. 24th are (via updates) rerouted on a Shiretoko branch. Minefield is branch that lives up to its name ... ;) You have to enter it on Your own risk ... :)

links are:
- for Shiretoko (I'm using that now) http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-mozilla-1.9.1/
- for Minefield (I've abandoned it for now on in order to be a bit safer, but as I can see, I've gave up a bit of speed too) http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-mozilla-central/ or, (most of the times) the same, http://ftp.mozilla.org/pub/mozilla.org/firefox/nightly/latest-trunk/

it's easy, since it doesn't include any installing, just extracting. :)
