Hi,

I was out shopping today and spotted a Linux magazine amongst all the other computer mags. I think it was called Linux Magazine, anyway I nearly bought it but it was a bit pricey at £6.49 () so I decided not to.

Can anyone recommend something a bit cheaper that is available in the UK? :)

Thanks for any suggestions.

Was it Linux format magazine?

http://www.linuxformat.co.uk/

It is a bit pricey but if you compare it to the price of a pack of cigarettes, it's not so bad. Besides, it comes with a DVD with at least four different distros every month.

I'm maybe a bit biased because this month they published a letter I sent them - I asked them if they would do a feature on Conky and they said it was a good idea.

Hey thats it :) I knew it was something like that. I thought it was a little pricey, especially considering the Windows mags where over £1 cheaper. To be quite honest I didn't look at whats on the DVD as I was horrified at the price. The articles looked pretty good though.

I suppose I am really asking is this the only real choice for Linux mags? I didn't see any others on the shelf, thats all :(

Once again thanks for any input

There's another Linux mag that WH Smith stock but it seems to be aimed ar server/enterprise Linux administrators. Haven't seen any other Linux mags about though.

Linux Format is really good though, they have some great tutorials, check out their website - they have archive copies of previous articles.

I like Linux Format too. It depends on what you're looking for in a magazine but it seems to me that Linux Format seems to strike a good balance between articles for absolute beginners and articles for users who are more experienced but still wouldn't consider themselves as technically minded. For those who are looking for an in-depth technical Linux magazine then Linux Format probably isn't for you.

IMHO the other Linux magazines on the WH Smiths shelf whilst not necessarily being American tend to have an American "feel" to them and are for the more technically advanced readers.

Theres nothing these linux magazines tell you that you can`t get from the web and theres nothing on the dvds that you can`t download - all for free.

That said good luck to them, problem is - I smoke.
