Nautilus: Can I turn off thumbnails in list view only?

I like seeing thumbnails in icon view (and I'm willing to wait a little for them to show up), but I really don't need them in list view. Anyway, I set them so small that they are completely superfluous.
So does anyone know how I can turn them off for list view only? Edit-Preferences-Preview does _not_ have the appropriate option: If I turn off thumbnails there, I also lose them in icon view.

Interesting idea, really useful really.
Couldn't find a solution, but, you can play a bit with the key

'/apps/nautilus/list_view/default_zoom_level'

Using gconf-editor.
I haven't been able to find a setting that does exactly what you want, but you can reduce the size of the thumbnails, unfortunately, it will affect the whole view as well.

hictio, I think this setting is the one you can also change under Edit-Preferences-Views.
And it's not what I want because I don't want to change the zoom level, but to completely turn off thumbnails for list view.

I agree, is there any way to do this? There would be a significant speed increase on slower comps.

You can of course report this on the Ubuntu and Gnome bug tracking systems. "nautilus slow" gives many search results...

One workaround to speed it up: Disable assistive technologies (System - Preferences)

i can only agree to this. i think the way you can configure thumbnails is pretty stupid in ubu.

i for example like to have my compact view on 150%, to have my icons bigger (made a nice icon set). but as soon as your view goes over 100%, thumbnails are created. and it is just stupid to replace a nice pdf icon with a white paper + black lines thumbnail shoot

of course you can switch it of in preferences to not preview, but than the thumbnails are also gone in icon view. And i really enjoy to have a thumbnail preview on pic folders, specially when working with graphics.

missing an option to make the view icon only, or thumbnail...

the setting i mostly use:
1) compact zoom is on 100%
2)in preferences: thumbnail preview for local only,
in this setup you will always have icons, except when you change to icon view and list view. sad part, compact will also change as soon as you go over 100%
