When you want to remove packages remember to use purge

Maybe you are looking to install a bare-bones Ubuntu version on your machine and build it up from there, yea? You might be going slightly the wrong way round by trying to customise the LiveCD then install ... :)

Another thing you can do is install the server edition which doesn't even have a desktop, then install gnome or kde and take it from there.
