do you adjust the sound? try double clicking on the volume icon and see if the master and PCM volumes are down. Often, when you adjust volume in one program it directly reduces the volume in one of these controllers.

I've also noticed that I can't have sound coming from both firefox and rhythmbox at the same time. It seems like one program takes over the sound card and doesn't let other programs access it.

I've always just assumed this was a as-yet-unfixed Ubuntu bug and it never bothered me enough to try to figure out how to fix it.

Will the sound come back if you close both programs and then open one up again? Or do you actually have to reboot the whole computer every time? What about logging out and logging back in?

rebooting is the only solution i've discoverd.
