I have Firestater and ClamAV installed and without warning I'm unable to access some websites, all email and webmail. Where should I look to see if these are being blocked please?

Very interesting. i don't think there is any way to tell from what you've said, but I doubt that the problem lies with either of those programs.

If you have screwed around with the settings in firestarter just prior to this occurring, that is a possibility. To eliminate Clamav, just shut it down. You down need it anyway, No one has seen a malicious linux virus "in the wild" for about 15 years....well, not one that worked, anyway.

Just read http://www.fs-security.com/docs.php
You need to open up some ports in order to be able to http and smtp and such.. Don't use Firestarter myself so can't help. But Firestarter should be configured correctly for sure.
