View Full Version : What desktop enviorement/window manager do you use?

linuxisevolution

What DE or window manager do you use, and why? It would be cool if you could include screenshots too.

EDIT: I made this post around midnight and forgot to add the other option, so COULD AN MOD OR ADMIN PLEASE ADD AN "OTHER" OPTION TO THE POOL?

EDIT #2: I REMADE THIS POLL AT THIS SITE (http://71.206.223.52/apache2-default/linforum/forum/forum/index.php?view=topic&board=1&top=1) SO THERE IS MORE OPTIONS.

Gnome (http://home.comcast.net/~seeker5528/Screenshot-Gnome-AWN.png)

KDE + Compiz (http://home.comcast.net/~seeker5528/Screenshot-ubuntu-cairo-dock1.png)

And older ones for:

Fluxbox (http://home.comcast.net/~seeker5528/Screenshot-Fluxbox2.png)

And the most recent KDE one after new KDE stuff started making it's way into Jaunty...

Sorry. I don't know how to change the poll options.

You can't after they've been created. You can, however, report this thread, making a new list of options and asking a staff member to change it.

I think I've permanently switched to Xfce. Used Openbox for a while, without panels, then I got tired of having no panels, and I couldn't find one that I really liked. Well, I liked pypanel, but there were some bugs that annoyed me. xfce4-panel, on the other hand, is great.

I played with KDE3.5 and KDE4.0 and then went to E17--which was amazing...except for the real lack of support and timely development action which bugged me to no end....I'm back on Kubuntu 8.10....and I'm quite happy.

it is more efficient just to have one login-manager, and then several desktop environs to pick a session from. It wastes fewer electons of bandwidth that way ;)

I use GNOME and XFCE regularly, XFCE and just a plain terminal without X running at all when I'm feeling less flashy.

I don't use KDE. I think it's ugly and that main menu makes me want to take a glass, break it into tiny pieces, and eat the pieces. It's that painful. I prefer a straightforward menu, no bells and whistles. One that allows me to run my programs in less than a second. Can't get that from KDE's main menu.

November 23rd, 2008, 08:58 AM
I switched to GNOME & XFCE a few weeks ago, after messing up the KDE 3.5 install I had enjoyed so much. (Ooops.) I figured that since 3.5 isn't being continued and I'm not a real fan of 4, I might as well switch to an environment that's being upgraded in a form I like in the future.

Oh, and count me in among the people that use a login manager to bounce from one environment to the next. I'll have to try KDE 4 in the future now that I've upgraded to Intrepid, and see if it's more appealing in its current incarnation. :)

RiceMonster
November 23rd, 2008, 09:01 AM
Using a login manager doesn't seem to make things more convenient for me, even for switching environments. It just makes things look nicer. All I have to do is:

<ctrl><alt><backspace>
vim .xinitrc
uncomment one line
comment another
:wq
startx

That took like 2 seconds.

I used to be a full-on KDE user until the upgrade to Intrepid Ibex. I'll admit, I wasn't really satisfied with KDE 4.0 or KDE 4.1, so I switched to GNOME.

I'm planning to check out KDE 4.2 when it is released, though.

I use KDE because it is always what I have used and it is what I am used to. I use Gnome on a couple of other machines, but it seems strange to me.

I can use either one, but feel more at home with KDE. Since I can install Gnome stuff into KDE and KDE tools in Gnome, I don't think it makes a huge difference.
