hey everyone. ive been running ubuntu for about 6 months now. and love it. been here through the change to 8.10 and cant wait to see what the next version my have instore, but i have become somewhat curious about BSD and very interested in the command line interface. and was just wondering if anyone has heard of an easy to install BSD version that i can put on a flash drive..Im really happy with ubuntu its very stable. the only problem im running into is gnome combined with firefox are a bit taxing on my computer together.. so most of the time ive been using Xfce, Fluxbox, or WindowMaker. But i want to try BSD without touching my hard drives..(2 ,40gb and 1 10 with my OS on it..) both 40s are filled right now. waiting on an external. BTW its kinda off topic but whats a generally well recognized brand of externals that has good linux support.

I don't have much experience with BSD systems on flash drives, but many LiveCD options, though a bit dated in some cases, are available. Testing some of these should allow you to get some idea of what type of BSD you want to install when you get your external.
BSDanywhere (http://bsdanywhere.org/)
TrueBSD (http://www.truebsd.org/)
RoFreeSBIE (http://www.rofreesbie.org/)
Quetzal (http://quetzal.matem.unam.mx/)
OliveBSD (http://g.paderni.free.fr/olivebsd/)
Jibbed (http://www.jibbed.org/)
DragonFlyBSD 2.1-DEVEL LiveDVD (http://distrowatch.com/?newsid=05066)

Also, just my two cents, but I suggest DesktopBSD for HD install for those new to BSD. There are many threads around here on PC-BSD and DesktopBSD, two more "new user friendly" BSD distributions.

Good luck!

Welcome to the dark side. I spent about 15 days trying to get this to work and decided it was to much of a hassle. BTX has issues on a pen drive generally causing the system not to boot.

If you do figure it out I would love to know, but I have a feeling it may be more of a headache than its worth.
