View Full Version : [ubuntu] Sudo apt-get install returns E: Couldn't find package

Hello. Earlier today I upgraded to 8.10 via a new clean install from cd.
I want to install my programs such as amarok, vlc, azureus, and gmail notifier, but I have come into a problem.

In terminal when I type sudo apt-get install vlc, it returns with:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
E: Couldn't find package vlc

It does this with all the programs I try.
If I try something like pidgin or firefox, which is already installed, it works fine and just tells me that the program is up to date and no updates are needed.

Any help with what might be wrong?

P.S.
I checked synaptic>repositories, and Universe and Multiverse are already checked.

Can you post your /etc/apt/sources.list?

cat /etc/apt/sources.list

Edit /etc/apt/sources.list

gksudo gedit /etc/apt/sources.list
and remove the four #'s in blue. Then, save it and close down the gedit window. Now, run

sudo apt-get update
sudo apt-get install vlc

I also ran into the same problem and I did as directed above, with no luck- any more ideas?

Taurus, I tried what you suggested and updated the sources list (really helpful to change the colour, btw :D ) but I'm still getting the 'couldn't find package' error messsage.

What now?
