I've just switch from gentoo to ubuntu and one of the things I'm missing is an equivalent to esearch.
I know how to use apt-cache, but it's output is very ugly compared to esearch's.
I really like how esearch tells you the currently available version and the currently installed version. Is there any command line program for ubuntu/debian that gives that information in a clear, easy to read format?

Not entirely commandline, but curses based "dselect" may be an option for you. Just install it, it is in the repositories.
