for me:

1. Change fonts. I love the bitstream vera fonts. IMO they look better than windows

2. Enable restricted extras. Go to add/remove programs and do a search for restricted. Make sure you have selected "all" and not just canonical maintained

3. change theme. I like the new darker human theme.. although I changed the background for it.

4. Add force quit and terminal to my panel. I have programs freezing alot especially rhythm box. Force quit is much cooler than task manager in windows

5. install virtual machine with windows in case I need to load up a program

.... Me too! Why do people hate it so much?! (I assume you meant DarkRoom, I call it NewHuman by mistake, a lot)

* install thunar (Nautilus has cooties)
* Enable wicD repositories, apt-get install wicd, get rid of that evil Network-Manger
* Enable compiz, load my compiz config, get AWN.
* Use my amazing-licious icons
* install conky and my config
* Remove both gnome-panels
* install gnome-do plugins
* Install my backed up gedit plugins
* load my terminal config
* Im too bored to post the rest.

:D It's so worth it!

....sorry, there is no top5.

Self note: make script to do all this for me -____________-
Anyone got any tips on that? :P

Remove Evolution, Ekiga, Bluetooth and Palm apps. Install xchat and pidgin to get me through all the file copying that lies ahead.
Copy all my config files over. ftp, apache, xorg, apt sources, fstab, etc.
Copy all the useful stuff out of my old home folder. All music, pictures, some program settings, Virtualbox Windows VM, documents, etc...
Copy my old list of programs over and pipe them into apt-get. Now all the programs i had in my last install are installed and up to date.
Pick a theme.

i've installed arch three times. each time, i put off installing x for a couple of days and just stayed in the console. i'd install everything i thought i would need (screen, dvtm, elinks, streamripper, cplay, mc and probably bsdgames) and then just listen to music and post stupid crap on the various forums i belong to.

There is a plugin called "foxmarks" for firefox which will save your bookmarks on a server, so you can load them up anywhere!

1. Sit there with a silly grin on my face, proud of what I did.

2. Beat myself over the head when I remember all the work it takes to set everything up.

3. Apologize to my wife for the hours of work I am about to invest into my computer.

4. Cry after realizing that I didn't back up some important files.

5. Weep when I realize I didn't really need to do it and that no matter how many times I reinstall, it still doesn't fix the inherent problems of any OS.

1. Disable desktop effects and other distracting eye candy
2. Run a bash script to install all the software I use regularly and remove the automatically installed things I don't use
3. Tweak the desktop to my liking (shortcuts, panel, etc.)
4. Set up SSH and other such things (I've been planning to add these to my install script, but so far I've been too lazy :p )
5. Try to get used to the new installation, because no matter how exactly I try to imitate my older setup, I always feel a bit out of place with a new installation, even if everything is almost exactly the same as before

I think those are the most important ones...
