HAL Error

I Have a message that comes up when booting in verbous - Hal status 13 relating to my graphics. I suppose linked to this is the fact that i cannot play any 3d games and even struggle with openGL screen savers (flickering, scraps of the screensaver left on the desktop). I'm new to ubuntu and after much digging and forum searching i cannot seem to correct this issue. My machine is more than capable of playing 3d games.......it just wont under ubuntu. SPEC: 1gb RAM, 230GB HDD, 256MB graphics, 1.73Ghz Intel dual core processor, Latest kernel, Ubuntu 8.10. Would appreciate any help.:confused:
