Sorry for the grovel but admist all the complaints, I have to write that I have now installed 8.10 successfully on my fourth and most awkward computer. It has two SATA and one IDE drive. One of the SATAs is the "C:" drive; now the other is Ubuntu's. (I nearly lost all my data in an earlier attempt -- it was recovered but only just.) This computer also has a Linksys i.e. Broadcom wireless card which earlier versions of Ubuntu and ndiswrapper flatly refused to have anything to do with. But wireless comms for 8.10 worked straight away from the install CD. Magic! I didn't even have to plug the computer into a wired connection.
