So I'm trying to get wireless installed on a Compaq Presario 731 laptop. I've tried several linux distributions without any luck. I've tried 3 different PCMCIA cards: Netgear WG511v1 (made in Taiwan), Netgear WPN511 (Atheros), and Belkin F5D7010 v3001 (RT2500). I've even tried Windows XP without any luck!!

I've tried:

Ubuntu 8.10
Ubuntu 8.04 LTS
Xubuntu 8.10
OpenSuse 11.1 RC1
Windows XP Home Edition

I've come to a conclusion, that if a laptop doesn't have an integrated wireless card, you can't make it wireless with a PCMCIA card. Is this true??

Absolutely NOT true!!!

All you need to do is just do a little search of these forums for WG511v1 and you'll find the solution--it will not be all wrapped up and presented to you in one neat package but the answers are all here if you just look. I've been using this wireless card with Ubuntu since 2006 to connect to network routers at home and on the road.

I am sure that you can just as easily find solutions for the other cards you have if only you do a bit of work and search these forums here. Also, the official Ubuntu documentation found at https://help.ubuntu.com/ and the useful community-generated documents found at https://help.ubuntu.com/community are troves of extremely valuable resources and knowledge. Look and you shall find...
