(sorry typo in Main title - should read 8.04.1)

I have a machine which I did a version upgrade from 7.10 to 8.04

I had to leave it over a weekend unattended and I later asked somebody else to close it down - which they did after the weekend. Not my preferred method of such events but that was life...

It was not apparently completed normally because when I looked at it, hal could not start and I was prompted to do a dpkg --configure -a to clean stuff up. That went ok and I applied some updates that were still held locally I believe, and a few more too.

So the version upgrade was not allowed to run fully nor properly at the time I think.

When rebooting with the top grub choice - the latest kernel
Ubuntu 8.04.1 kernel 2.6.24-21 generic

- I find that the initial booting progress bar continues and does not stop.
ctrl alt F1 terminal view initially shows
[137.961317]ata1.00:revalidation failed (errno=5)
(and a lot more of other stuff too)

If I reboot and choose the previous normal entry (3rd in grub list)
Ubuntu 8.04.1 kernel 2.6.22-15 generic
then everything works ok

I have temporarily set the entry in menu.lst to (2) to get a working machine

Can I refresh the last (kernel) update or re run something to force a cleanup?
