I'm a little embarrassed, but I just discovered you can move the taskbar to the top of the screen like in Ubuntu.

Awesome :)

Not in Vista. I've tried and I've tried and I've tried.

Sigh, I miss 9x.

You can do it in Vista, but you first need to right-click and choose "unlock".

Bar on the top is useless for me. I like having the Close button (X) on the very top-right edge of the screen so I can move the mouse fast without having to carefully position it above the button, so I can close maximised windows easily.

It's very useful to do that if you vnc/rdesktop/pcAnywhere into a Windows box often that's the same resolution or higher than your main desktop. That way you don't have to scroll down to the start button or work full-screen.
