Open Everything...

I was reading some other LoCo boards and stumbled across this thread (http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=982483) and wanted to gauge any interest you folks have in trying to get something like this scheduled in New York State... I would think Syracuse would be the likely spot...

The "group" in NYC is based with UNICEF. I don't the details, but they did contact gang@openeverything.net.

I contacted the group as well... I am part of the NY State LoCo team - I am not aware of an Ubuntu group that is just NYC.

I think the topic is an important one. The Syracuse Lug (http://www.syrlug.org/) just had their last meeting on IP and open source and it was very well received.

I'm wondering what specifically you had in mind. Were you thinking of a convention, or public meeting. Are we thinking about a single event or multiple events? What would be the target audience?

I can't speak for the NY team, but you should check out http://openeverything.wik.is for what has been going on. I'm happy to answer any specific questions about what happened in Madison. I can speak a little bit about the other cities and certainly put you in touch with individuals from those cities. Also, it might be worth e-mailing gang@openeverything.net

It would be an 'event'... not sure if it would be a conference... though perhaps it could. The idea, in general, is to spread the idea of open... Open Source software is just a start... why not Open Government... why not Open City Planning... why not Open ???

Yes, I would still say we need help in making this happen in Upstate NY - my target would be Rochester or Syracuse for a city. The biggest hurdle for 'me' is finding an appropriate location for the event that does not have a 'cost' associated with it or finding a source of funding. If you have guidance in that arena it would be most apprectiated.


Tonight we are having an OpenStreetMap.org presentation. Which fits in with the open everything theme.

Universities usually have space for this sort of thing. It just requires getting someone associated with the school to sign off.

Also, I'd talk to John Britton of the NYC team about fundraising. He's done a much better job than the Madison group on that end.

Also, I'd suggest join the #openeverything IRC room on freenode as well as our discussion list at http://groups.google.com/group/open-everything-discuss/ (which I see you linked in the first post).

Last, but not least, we'll be using the #openeverything tag in both locations on http://identi.ca on Saturday, so I suggest following along with us and participating in the discussion Saturday.
