I have a Dell computer with Win2000 on it (ntfs format)& wish to install Ubuntu (or possibly Xubuntu) and cannot manage to reformat the HD w/ gparted or even win based tools.

Suggestions?

What is the error message when you try to format it with gparted? Why not just install Ubuntu and when you get to the partition part, tell the installer to use the whole disk, wiping out windows?

Well, I tried Ubuntu live CD in by itself...crank up the machine....it doesn't read the disc/ same thing with gparted.

OK, a computer tech at school found out that they CD rom drive was not working (computer is at school in my classroom). I tried hooking up another one quickly but could not get it to work(yet). Then I tried setting up HH to boot from a USB drive (using some program/folder) but w/o success. Could anyone steer me in the right direction for setting it up to boot from a USB drive? Have any had success with a particular method of USB booting?

Thanks.
