View Full Version : [ubuntu] Mounting partitions with different Ubuntu LiveCD's

I seem to have a hardware problem.

I installed 8.04 on an Athlon generic box with a WD hard drive months ago and it worked fine for months. I recently restarted the machine and discovered that it no longer mounted the root file system on boot. I was consistently dropped into a BusyBox shell.

I had downloaded an 8.10 install disk and could boot from that disk and mount all of my partitions fine. But no matter what I did, I couldn't get any 8.04 kernel to work.

Today I decided I was taking too much time messing with this problem and that I would backup and reinstall (not my favorite option). When I booted off of the 8.04 disk, the partitioner didn't recognize any disks.

If I boot from the 8.10 LiveCD I can mount my partitions.
If I boot from the 8.04 LiveCD I can NOT mount my partitions.

I previously installed 8.04 on THIS machine with that disk.
I don't remember doing anything with the hardware.

What is the difference between the drivers and such between these disks that would cause this?
