View Full Version : [ubuntu] Files vanishing from cache apt archives

Running Hardy i386 on two desktops and a laptop. I keep a copy of my /var/cache/apt/archives folder on an external USB HDD so that I only have to download updates and packages once on one machine* -- I then simply copy across any new files to the other machines and run an update or install the packages. This has been working fine. However, I notice sometimes that many files vanish "automatically" from the archives folder sometimes? It seems to be files starting with letters from the first half or second half of the alphabet, which seems very strange. I'm careful when I synchronize the folders, so what could be causing this? I use aptitude rather than apt-get. Is there some default setting that limits the size of this folder and dumps files automatically to maintain that folder size?

*a standard ADSL residential account in my country is 1GB per month. Australian users get 25GB? 250GB for USA? :-)
