Can't see desktop after upgrading to 8.10

I recently upgraded to ubuntu 8.10 from 8.04. After a regular boot ubuntu shows a white screen for a moment then the login box. Once I enter my username and password it just shows the empty screen nothing else.

can you please help me how I fix this thing.
