I decided as 8.10 is out that I would do a clean install. It appeared to install fine but the machine hangs trying to load Gnome. I get to the log on in window but once the user id and password are entered the machine just locks up. Sometimes the screen is black sometimes I see a brown screen (the desktop colour).

So I tried booting the live CD and I got the same problem.

Hardy (8.04) installed and works fine (I am using it now).

My machine is an older compaq (vintage is about 2002) with on board Intel graphics, 512 mb ram, 1.9ghz processor, a cd burner and a dvd burner. I am booting Ubuntu off an external USB drive.

Any ideas as I would like to move to 8.10 if possible.
