(November 2005): "Reliability: Analyzing Solution Uptime as Business Needs Change" by Herbert Thompson. In a simulation of an e-commerce solution maintained, enhanced, and upgraded over time, this commissioned study found a Windows-based solution was more reliable than a Linux-based solution as business needs

Did anyoen read that article? It was a pretty intense article. I believe someone blogged something about the whole thing and it was posted on /. It was very interesting, I'm still kind of a newbie when it comes to linux, but I've done some minor IT work, and I know for a fact that it's not that easy to update windows. That being said, NO operating system is easy to do major updates on. When you effect major operating parameters, expect to have a little bit of trouble. Because nothing is flawless, microsoft has taught us that.

Of course, the article was done by an 'unbiased' consulting firm. Then again, who flipped the bill for the study? I'm going to guess and say it wasn't any linux distro ;)

How coincidental it is that a Windows Server is better than a Linux server on ALL counts; total cost of ownership AND reliability, AND security, AND IP "indemnification", AND performance, AND interoperability. According to the Microsoft Dictionary (http://www.ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=73660), the term facts is a "convenient set of fictions that are biased in Microsoft's favor." :)

this is such a crock. i came into a job where they were using a windows servers for various tasks. we'd get a call at least once a month saying that one server or another went down again. we slowly started switching over to linux servers for the win2k workstations, and now the only one still running windows is the domain controller. the web, ftp, file, fax, and email servers have only been down once since, and that's bc everything went down when some construction guys broke the pipe coming into the building. each service was also on a different box for a reason, and all the boxes were set up that if something went wrong, we could have one pick up the load transparently within minutes. i have since left that job, but the uptimes on all servers, except for the windows domain controller, are all the day that the construction guys fixed the pipe.... last year.

and if u have the slightest clue of what you're doing in a debian based distro (like ubuntu), you can have a running lamps server setup from scratch (format and install) in under an hour.
