When I boot my Dell Optiplex 740 system from the Ubuntu 8.10 live CD and select the try without installing, the system boots to a login prompt and will not allow me to go to the desktop. I tried my local windows login which did not work. I have no idea what Ubuntu is expecting as a login and password here. Never seen this before.

I also noticed that from this login window, I cannot shutdown the system from the options menu, it just keeps coming back to the login window.

I will try to boot it from a v8.04 Live CD to see if that works properly.

Thanks for any ideas or suggestions...

I have the exact same problem.....I can install or use the live user 8.04 disk. That is the only way I can retrieve some of my files. If you get any answers please let me know.

When the livecd does this there are a few things you can do...
1. Wait a bit while the login prompt timer gets to zero; it will load then.
2. Reboot the cd and choose "Safe Graphics Mode".
3. Reboot until the login prompt fails to appear (may take a few tries).
4. Burn another copy of the iso as SLOW as possible (4x is advised).
5. Try the Ubuntu Alternate cd (text only installer).

1. There wasn't a prompt timer.
2. I didn't see a safe graphic mode option.
3. Continual re-booting didn't change aything.
4. I tested the copy and it said it was good. I made 2 copies to verify this and still the same results.
5. Don't know what the alternate cd is or how to install it.
