im looking to buy an external hardrive 80-160gb with a firewire 400 connection does anyone know if there would be any compatibility problems im interested in this-http://www.lacie.com/uk/products/product.htm?pid=10384 will it work with my ubuntu pc?

must it be firewire as aldi curruntly have usb2 250gb 3yr guarrantee medion hddrive2go at £99 which is Vfat and works beautifully on xp or ubuntu

and before anyone says there is a freecom from pc world for £89 its only 2yr guarantee and £4.99 delivery as I'm miles away from them

I use one of these http://www.lacie.com/uk/products/product.htm?pid=10511 and it works well using firewire 400 or usb (have not tried firewire 800).

I also have a very similar 80gb one (same case, but only firewire 400), and that has worked well for 3.5 years.

i imagine the porsche ones are very similar internally.

firewire mass storage seems to work perfectly in linux, and i think in the real world firewire 400 is faster than usb2.

Do you notice any difference in cpu usage or responsiveness or speed between the usb and firewire connections? I have a usb external drive and have been generally not happy with it and am wondering ia firewire version would be better.
