I recently installed Ubuntu 8.10 on a spare usb drive. So far I am impressed. I would like to use it on an old Pentium 3 (800 MHz, 500 megs of ram)as a file server.

1- does a file server come with Ubuntu desktop version 8.10?

2- Any suggestions for a dependable file server?

This would be for a home network, I would occasionally be downloading files from it while at work.

Thanks

Brian

No I simply want to run a solid file server such as Serv-U FTP server for windows (example only). I'm still in the planning stage. I might try installing Ubuntu server 8.10 without some of the services??

Thank you

Try this http://www.howtoforge.com/ubuntu-home-fileserver

Note: It's based on the 7.10 server edition, so it might be outdated.
If you use this: Please let me know if this still works (I'm thinking about trying this myself).

if its a file server for your network , then you could use samba.. anyway since you want ftp , you could try gproftpd http://prash-babu.blogspot.com/2008/07/how-to-install-ftp-server-gproftpd-in.html

Read about it last night. I'm thinking about emailing the author for more info (current updates?).

Thx
