View Full Version : [ubuntu] gnome-menu

November 16th, 2008, 01:04 PM
i have got all the eyecandy(compiz, emerald and other customisations like my favourite iconset, screenlets, etc.) up and running with ubuntu hardy on my rig(my system is in triple boot with hardy, intrepid and windows xp).a friend of mine who is a mac user finds my desktop to be much better and beautiful than his.
but,the simplicity of gnome-menu seems pretty odd in such an aesthetic desktop(i use gnome and occasionally KDE 4.1).The KDE 4.1 menu is pretty good.but,i especially like that of vista for its sleek and glossy design, and i know that there are apps that imitate the vista menu very well, but i don't use anything that is even close to windows on ubuntu.so,certainly i can't use any such app to get a vistaish menu.but,is it possible to have an original linux menu that parallels that of vista in terms of eye-candy,sleekness and glossiness?

thanks in advance

i guess something like screenlets/widgets or customized menu plugins could help you, or not?
also screenlets packet can be installed from general repositories through synaptic...

Are you using AWN yet? Perhaps they have a menu applet.

Glossines is not something you should build into an application or applet, it should follow the standard of the theme you are running. That said, some things, like applets doesn't always follow theme specifications and may as a result look a bit odd. I guess it's a work in progress?
Either way, if you want a menu with a bit more bling to it, then install gnome-main-menu from the repos. It's a bit like the vista menu i guess, meaning it's more like an application than a drop down menu really.

the gnome-main-menu is not good at all.

is it possible to have a KDE 4.1 like menu?

I feel i need to clarify myself, as this may not be as obvious as it should be. I'm NOT talking about what is called "the main gnome menu" when you add an applet, but the "default menu and application browser".

Maybe you already figured that out?

You can try gnomenu with different themes.
You can try Ubuntu System Panel (http://code.google.com/p/ubuntu-system-panel/w/list)
