Just wanting to know out of curiosity, how many desktops do you have and what do you use them for?
Was considering making a poll but there's probably be too much choices :P

I also categorize apps. 4 workspaces, 1 is for terminal and filesystem, 2 is for network related apps, 3 is for multimedia apps, 4 is mainly reserved for fullscreen text editing.
I use the bottom right screen edge to initiate expo for switching.

I have 4 workspaces (Openbox).
One is usually for programming tools (Geany, a terminal, etc).
Another is usually for web apps (Opera, Emesene)
And sometimes I have either OpenOffice or AbiWord (Depends on the job) open on the 3rd workspace.
I rarely use the 4th but it's always good to have just in case.

Nine tags (dwm). I use them for categorizing and switching fullscreen apps.

I have 4 desktops. I usually use one. I use the others when someone else is using my computer. They can do their thing on their desktop, while my open applications stay untouched.

I don't use workspaces. If I have to do something that intensive, I use wmii.

I typically use just one workspace but I use the others for various means.
Like if i want to keep my browser and media player in seperate workspaces I will do so.
But I have been thinking of just dumping the other workspaces as i dont use them much.

I use them to hide things all the time.
I have two. One for what I'm actually using, one for windows that are doing something on their own.

I seem to have set up 4 workspaces but now have this problem -
I was able to access the different workspaces by clicking one of the blue boxes on bottom RH of my screen but they have been deleted.
How do I reinstate these boxes?
Sorry for terminology but am somewhat a beginner.

Are you using KDE (Kubuntu) or Gnome (Ubuntu)?
In KDE you right click on panel and add widget, the widget called "Pager" is what you're looking for.
Not sure about Gnome but since most people here use it I'm sure someone else can answer that

Workspace 1/ general usage, firefox for browsing maybe one of the games or stuff usually a terminal somewhere on there.
Workspace 2/ office type work, word processing, spreadsheets so on.
Workspace 3/ Simulations (i have to build computer models regularly for my university course)
Workspace 4/ Media editing, videos, pictures and audio
Workspace 5/ Virtual machines
Workspace 6/ Maintenance/System admin stuff
Linux vs windows: with linux i no longer have a cluttered desktop, i have SIX!

On my MacBook I use workspaces to hide what I'm doing from my parents or to isolate school work so I don't get distracted by other things.
On my Mini I use XMonad and the 1024x600 screen lends itself to having maximized apps so I just put all my terminals in workspace 9 or 8 and I keep XChat in #1, Vimperator in #2, Mutterator in #3, and currently Abiword in #4. I leave #s 5, 6, and 7 open to play games or something.

I usually use a new workspace when I start working on something I know will need a few windows. Eg. a school exercise. Some weeks I use up to 9 workspaces, others only one.

Three desktops. #1 is for work. #2 is for the 'net. #3 is for music.
