4 things,

1. The Running man (log out) on the top left of the screen is only showing

Guest Session
Lock Screen
Log out

instead of shutdown/restart etc

2. Sound was working about 5 minutes ago.. but now all i get is crackle and nothing resembling sound..

3. a drive that previously mounted automatically (my main xp partition) is now saying i dont have permission.

4. on Shutdown, iwl3945 (my wireless card) stops the machine from cleanly shutting down

Its really wiered that all this has just started happening today

I know there is a lot to play with there.. sorry!

Try System->Shutdown. That icon only deals with logging in/out.

Cable still in?

3. a drive that previously mounted automatically (my main xp partition) is now saying i dont have permission.

Was it a forced shutdown of XP?

4. on Shutdown, iwl3945 (my wireless card) stops the machine from cleanly shutting down

No idea here

They seem unrelated, but should be if they all happened together.

2. Sound
dbl click sound icon to go to properties. make sure PCM is all the way up.
Maybe that's it :/

3. drive.

4. wireless
whats the last msg you see when shutting down? (assuming you have the splash image turned off.

Yikes, what a day!

Update

OK, I've Heard about the hard power off problem with XP, And for now that seems to of sorted itself out.

Sound issue is sorted out also, PCM volume was extremely low (ie off).

Still to sort

the lack of shutdown on that menu is disturbing, as i've been using it since 6.04 :S.

and as for the wireless problem i dont know, as i've only restarted once!

IF you right-click of the panel and go to "Add-to-panel" there is a thing you can add that gives you shut-off options.

I know i should revive old threads, but

Everything seems to be working fine on 9.04, in which i am grateful!

it has it's foibles, but 9.04 is a big step forward, and much better than 8.10...
