Well it's Friday night and before I head out to other geekish activities I thought I would start a thread on a fun subject. So clean out that closet and look under your desk! What is the oldest distro CD you have lying around? I was thinking back to the days of yore when you would go to CompUSA and find 5 - 6 Linux Distros on the shelf; when Linux companies were popping up left and right.
I couldn't find my Caldera CDs anywhere lol, those would have been good for a laugh especially with the whole SCO debacle. Here's the oldest CD I could find, Redhat 6.2 :D

So now it's your turn Ubuntu community, and throw in a picture too.

Hi,

Yeah, I've got a copy of that RH6.2, and also copies of Mandrake 7.0 & 7.2.

Kinda hard to believe how far any Linux distro has come.

The only old ones I have lying around are mandrake 9.2 and fedora core 2.

I threw out most of my old linux cd's when I stopped using the distro. (I only burned them, not bought.)

Wow, never would I have thought I'd be proud of this, but I have:

a redhat 5
what looks like a Caldera 1
A Turbolinux Cluster (I was proud of that one!)

The dude running our LUG used the RH disc to help me install on my thinkpad 360c or something--it was his first linux laptop install. It took about 2 weeks for us to get a working KDE desktop!

Does Windows count as a distro? In that case, I have a Win 95 CD somewhere.

I used to have DOS5 boxed set. 3 floppies and a thick book! I think I only ever used the book for looking up the ascii codes for special characters.

<fx> fast forward to the future </fx>

Aye, I remember way back then you could fit an entire OS on one CD!

Imagine that, less than 700MB! and you had to actually 'burn' the CD after spending literally hours downloading something called an ISO file.

How ever did we manage? :-)

Here are some often not seen CDs, the black one is a preview of the 2.4 kernel...way ahead of its time lol.

Thought I'd show y'all up. These aren't on cd (cds didn't exist then) but I have copies of Windows 1.0, DOS 2.(something) and someware I have some software on CPM disks. All these disks are 360kb, the CPM are probably only one-sided - I haven't looked at them for awhile.

On the Linux side, I have Linux for Windows (Mandrake 6.1), and Mandrake 6.5 and a burned copy of Corel - don't know what version. I'll have to do a MAJOR look-see to see what else I have but these are the oldest.

Yeh, my Suse CD has 2.4 on it. The manual talks about "an exciting sneak peek" into 2.6, heh...

"S.u.S.E. Linux November 95" (with a brand new 1.2.13 kernel) , back then they didn't had numerical version numbers like 4.3 etc. on their cover. Actually "November 95" is a rahter nice "version number" not unlike Ubuntu's scheme.

Quite interesting subject! The oldest distro installation CD I still have is Suse from spring, 1998. Can't remember which version it is. It came with some magazine and it was the first Linux distribution I installed (on a 120MHz Pentium with 32 megabytes of RAM) and I remember thinking "wow - it is actually fun to use computers again!". It was amazing to discover that you could tweak anything and everything if you wanted to - you could do only very little tweaking with Windows at the time.

It's a Slackware Version 2.02 Volume 5.

I still have the seven Woody cds I burned....

Corel linux ships with linux 2.2 and kde 1.1. Ha!

I think I will try to install it an a spare box here and dist-upgrade to Breezy! It should boot on a Compaq Deskpro EN from 1999. If the kids nap long enough, I'll try that right away...

Oldest floppies are Debian 1.3. Oldest CD is probably RedHat 5 or Slackware 3 something.
