I have installed my first copy of Ubuntu on a HP NX6325 laptop but can't seem to change the screen res above 1024x768 I would prefer at least 1280x1024, the gfx chipset is ATI RS485m, is there a driver I need for this?

I have an aged ATI Radeon 9800 Pro, and couldn't get the resolution i wanted until i installed the:
xserver-xorg-video-ati, xserver-xorg-video-radeon, and the xorg-driver-fglrx drivers.

I don't know if these would help you, but they may well do so. :)
