been a while since ive been on the forums. i just came back to linux/ubuntu yesterday and i have a fresh install of hardy on my system. ive downloaded and installed all the non free codecs for playing mp3's ect. i can hear audio just fine from sites like pandora and youtube but when i try to play an mp3 from my hard drive i get no sound and the application becomes almost non responsive. same thing happens with wma video. i can actually see video but no audio. any suggestions?

That means you have flash installed ok. Have you installed nonfree-codecs or win32codecs or win64codecs.

Have you tried resetting your audio programs or a reboot?

Don't you just need to install GStreamer?
it works fine over here ;)

Just try to play your music in rhythembox and then a popup shows the ones you should install

for wma you'll need to search for the 'bad' package in synaptic
just look at the description and install the right one :)
