If you are a complete beginner try Python - or if you enjoy being totally confused and looking at the world sideways - try Haskell.

Seriously though Python is a very good bet - it comes installed as standard on Ubuntu - does not need compilers etc - i just works. and you will be walking in very good company, a lot a Ubuntu applications and utilities are written in Python.

A good Python Tutorial is here :

You might want to start by reading the sticky :)

http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=796494

It has a "How to Start" section. I'd suggest reading that, and then ask again if you're still unsure of what to do.

Welcome and good luck :)

Whatever languages/tools you decide to learn, chances are pretty good that help is available here :)
