If you run

sudo fdisk -l
you will see a list of your partitions. What exactly is wrong with your desktop? What do you mean by "get the desktops back"?

It would just show you the layout of your harddrive(s). It's not going to hurt your system or anything.

The big question is how did you "kill" your desktop?

i tried to install kubuntu.. i did have kde but did not like it as compiz would not work..
it took over 6 hrs to install the package and wwhen it booted up it showed a desktop with 3 different options.
i beleive qassar was one, dave and another..
mouse would not work or key board to enter the desktop login.
i let it run for about 1/2 hr and decided to reboot again and that is when all the problems started..

i have to type startx at the root desktop.
this takes me to a screen with 4 different options..
repair
root boot
etc.
i tried all 4 and only way is to type startx and this will take me to ubuntu log in screen but neithewr keyboard or mouse work..
i had to switch to xp to get to here and try to figure this out..
i can right click my comp and see my drive with all kinds of files..
i seem to have 5 hard drives installed on my ubuntu hd..
does this help
ty again

Out of curiosity i have been searching and found the following to try..
<ALT>+<SysRQ OR Prnt Screen> +<command key
which areR,E,I,S,U,B
it says to do each one seperately and let them run their course..
would this make me lose any data?
and can i do this from the root@desktop~$
