Is there any free email for Ubuntu?

Yahoo email, Googlemail, Gmail in fact any browser based email will work.

There is nothing special about email that ties it to Ubuntu or windows - even hotmail should work via firefox on Ubuntu.

You may well also be able to set up an email client on your PC to read your emails from many of those web based systems.

Hi; welcome to the forum!

What exactly do you mean by 'email'?

If you mean 'email client', there's Evolution, which is pre-installed with Ubuntu, or alternatively, there's Thunderbird.

If you mean @ubuntu.com e-mail addresses, then no; these are reserved for Ubuntu Members.

Please try to be more specific when you post. :)

I have been using Yahoo email since 1998. I started using Gmail about a year ago.

https://login.yahoo.com/config/mail?.intl=us
https://www.google.com/accounts/ServiceLogin?service=mail&passive=true&rm=false&continue=https%3A%2F%2Fmail.google.com%2Fmail%2F%3 Fhl%3Den%26tab%3Dnm%26nsr%3D1%26ui%3Dhtml%26zy%3Dl&bsv=1k96igf4806cy&ltmpl=default&ltmplcache=2&hl=en

Never ever any issues. It dooes not require a email application. I could get a address through Charter for Evolution but Charter has too many spam issue. My stepson use to use Charter email and he switched to Yahoo email about a year ago. Great anti virus and spam control.

Windows Live Messenger / Hotmail. (http://get.live.com/mail/options)
Yahoo Mail (http://uk.mail.yahoo.com/)
GMail (https://www.google.com/accounts/NewAccount?service=mail&continue=http%3A%2F%2Fmail.google.com%2Fmail%2Fe-11-11061aaa0e3913d8cb0328279ef0e952-bc8d0db1d06ee703b0075597edd3c19d6db2917d&type=2&gd=1)

I'd go with Windows Live myself, but its all dependant on your taste and what you are going to use.

For emails only go with GMail.

I'd advise against Windows Live/Hotmail, they aren't kind to Linux users.
I closed my account with them not so long ago.

Microsoft has deliberately broken compatibility or something like that.

Also, if you like GMail, go into Add/Remove, search for 'google mail' and install the first entry. It runs GMail in Prism as if it's a program like Thunderbird, it's pretty cool and worth checking out.

I really like GMX, I don't think I've found any free email service on the net that is as good as it. It has a large inbox, great web interface (that works well with Firefox in Linux), it has a mail collector so that you can collect all your other email accounts through GMX, it has no ads (except some discrete ones on the logout screen), has POP3/IMAP compatibility to collect your email in an email program - and it's all free. I have it set up to collect all my email accounts, including Windows Live, and it works really well. I keep trying to find the catch but there doesn't seem to be one.

It is marked as beta, and the only problem I seem to have is occasionally some attachments don't work.

I personnaly use Gmail. Ads are text-olny at the top of the page, easy to ignore. Great spam filtering (unlike my college email) and the ability to fetch mail from other services that include POP3 access. Plus, it has POP access itself, making it usible within Thunderbird, Evolution, and other email clients. Many progams are avialible in the repos for notification and control as well. It also loads the User Interface only once, making it great for slow connections.

I used to have a gmx (gmx.net - which I assume is the same company) account a long time ago (about 7 years ago, I think). Then they decided to lose their English interface (i.e. German only), so I stopped using it.

Presumably they've got a larger English-speaking user-base again.

I received the following from Windows Live tech support:

Thank you for writing to Windows Live Hotmail Technical Support. My name is Maybelle and I understand that you are having issues with your account. I apologize for any inconvenience this may have caused you.

Upon checking the information that you have provided us, we have noticed that you are using Linux to access Windows Live Hotmail. I regret to inform you that Linux is not currently a supported operating system of Windows Live Hotmail. This is the reason why you are encountering issues. In the meantime, I suggest that you use another computer with a different operating system to access your account.

In other words, use Windows OS or no hotmail.

I think Windows Live was telling people they needed to update their browser to the latest Internet Explorer or Firefox even if they had they latest Firefox installed if it was running under Linux.

I currently use Gmail though used Yahoo for many years with no complaints.

Are you having that problem where Hotmail prompts you to upgrade your browser whenever you log in?

Are you using Firefox? If so, check the general.useragent.vendor setting under about:config and change the value to Firefox if it is currently set to Ubuntu.

Hopefully this will resolve your problem.

I have already applied the vendor fix, and yes, I can send email in hotmail, but have not received any emails that usually came to my account. So I switched all to yahoo and have had no further problems.
