View Full Version : [ubuntu] ATI Catalyst 8.11 FGLRX driver crash

Hello,

Running a fully patched 8.04.1 LTS (Hardy Heron) system. Radeon Mobile x2300 card on an HP 6910p laptop.

Previously running ATI Catalyst FGLRX 8.10 driver. Manually installed ( http://wiki.cchtml.com/index.php/Main_Page ).

Worked beautifully, Suspend & Hibernate, dual screen - you name it.

Tried to upgrade to 8.11 and crashed. Bulletproof X kicked in (nice feature) and booted me into a 800x600 VESA X server. Tried uninstall & reinstall.

Finally removed 8.11 and went back to 8.10.

Anyone else have this issue with 8.11? Is 8.11 incompatible with 8.04.1?

Thanks
- CH

CH,

You are not alone. The exact same thing happened to me, and I also had to go back to the ATI Catalyst FGLRX 8.10 driver.

I have a destop PC running a fully patched 8.04.1 LTS (Hardy Heron) 32-bit system, AMD Sempron 2500+, Radeon 9600XT video graphics card.

Guessing there is something flawed in the 8.11 driver, or there is a missing step in METHOD 2 of the manual install instructions.

It's good to know someone else had the problem also. :lolflag:

**After reading the release notes concerning the 8.11 driver, I'm content to stay with 8.10 because there's really nothing new relevant to my video card anyway.

Thanks, good to know. I'll file a bug with ATI and post the bug number back here.

Hi,

same problem to me: 8.10 works perfectly (using right now), tried update to 8.11 manual method but fglrx driver hangs while loading DRM module.

I have a IBM laptop with mobility fireGl v3200 ( ~mobility radeon x600)

I've reverted back to 8.10 and will skip 8.11 version (i actually have no reason to update).

Let us what ATI folks say!

cheers

This bug is also reported in launchpad.

8.552 is working for me on intrepid. As suggested in the launchpad thread I installed the packages provided by intrepid-proposed (checkbox in Synaptic->Repositories->Updates)

I seem to be having an unrelated issue where my DVI connection wont work (only analog). It was working with hardy but not intrepid so I was hoping this update would fix it. No dice.

Hi, how do you revert to a earlier version of ATI catalyst driver?

Hi, how do you revert to a earlier version of ATI catalyst driver?

I start Xorg with radeon driver (just edit xorg.conf and reboot), then simply remove all fglrx packages with synaptic, delete the /etc/ATI directory and delete everything under /var/lib/dkmg/fglrx; finally i simply re-do the procedure using previous ATI driver package...

bye

I updated this morning to proposed 8.11 in Intrepid (amd64) and my laptop booted in low res. Reverting to 8.10.

Seems that the new driver is broken...

It looks like 8.11 driver has serious problems... i'm using hardy too (intrepid has still some youth problems) and i will stick to 8.10; if you do not have specific issue requiring driver update (i have none) keep using 8.10. By mid December 8.12 will be out and we will try that release instead.

I myself should remind me more often the old saying "don't fix it if it ain't broken"

yep, sounds like a plan, 8.10 is working well so I wait and see if 8.12 are any better.

Thanks all,

Please use 8-11 from intrepid-proposed if you want to use 8-11

This appears to work for me on intrepid.
