I just had an issue on one of my Kubuntu machines where the machine's hard drive ran out of disk space.

Turns out the culprit was a fairly massive (32GB) .xsession-errors file in my primary user's home directory.

Is there anyway to either limit its size or disable it from being written?

I have no need to have this error log and I'd imagine it would really only be useful for debugging purposes, so I wonder why is this file set to be written to by default? It seems to just be constantly growing non stop on any linux systems I encounter (with X servers, at least).

Seeing as Ubuntu is intended to be as user friendly as possible, shouldn't disabling or limiting the size of such files by default in the distribution be a consideration? I could imagine some poor unsuspecting Ubuntu users who are not necessarily Linux savvy suddenly finding their hard drives full and not knowing that the issue lies in a log file they may never need and even still, not even be aware that the log file exists because it is a hidden file somewhere within their home directory.
