PLEASE HELP! Xserver continously fails to start after upgrade from 8.04.1 to 8.10.

Hello All

I am fairly new to linux world. I really look forward to the help of experienced for practical solutions to my problem without which I am helpless. Uptill now I was very happy with ubuntu even though I had to take a lot of pain to sort out problems that occurred in the beginning and in between but the problem caused by this upgrade is beyond my competence and I had to switch back to windows to write to you and do other stuff. But I like ubuntu and want to get it as it was.

I will try to give my stepwise scenario (including steps I took) to help identify the problem
After I upgraded to 8.10 last night the xserver failed to start with message:
Kinit: No resume image found doing normal boot.....then the message xserver failed to start ... it may not be correctly set.

and then i was given the option of text based login

I tried several times the following commands (in recovery and normal mode) but the problem remained:
sudo dpkg-reconfigure xserver-xorg
sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg

I went though several ubuntu forum threads and other relevant places and found few solutions suggested by others. Apart from above commands few things I did (in recovery mode)are:

ran sudo appt-get install update-usplash-theme usplash-theme-ubuntu (was unsuccessful as it was not found and nothing happened)
also tried sudo nano /etc/usplash.conf (here the resolution was xres 1024 and yres 768 which I think is correct and matches my previous config)

Then I tried sudu swapoff /dev/sda2; sudo mkswap /dev/sda2 and sudo swapon /dev/sda2 ... this stopped showing the Kinit: no resume image- message ... but then I stopped getting text based login prompt in normal mode (after the xserver failed)but did get login prompt in recovery mode.

I also reinstalled:
sudo aptitude install --reinstall ubuntu-desktop xorg xserver-xorg xserver-xorg-input -all -y
sudo mv /etc/X11/xorg.conf /etc/X11/xorg.conf.backup
and then ran sudo dpkg-reconfigure -phigh xserver-xorg
nothing happened and the problem remained (except no kint; message and missing login prompt in normal mode)

Just before swapoff I also mistakenly ran du -a which gave a long list which I could not understand. I don's know if I have messed up my system.

Then I was completely frustrated and shout down the laptop and went to sleep at 1 am.

I have a Toshiba satellite pro M-70 with ATI radeon x300.
I was running dual boot xp and ubuntu before the problem.
I can try to post brief xserver output as I don't know how to take out the entire file and then be able to post to the internet. My base system was edubuntu and I also have kubuntu things on that including kdm.

Is it possible to have a fresh 8.10 install and and get all my application, configurations and settings back I spent a lot of time in them. Before upgrade I backed my system in 2 ways:
1. used remastersys to make a dist backup image (sans my personal data)
2. used sbackup to backup everything (to xp partition) except the folders /proc, /sys, /tmp, /var/cache, /var/cache/tmp /media and /lost+found.

Please advice on restore process as some people have said (in a different context) that during the restore process either avoid restoring grub/boot and etc/fstab or make a current copy of /boot and /etc/fstab and replace the restored once with new ones.

I am more interested in getting the system right without going through re installation and restore process.

the end of your xorg.0.log looks like the one I had...

I solved the problem by disabling DRI (Direct Rendering Interface). To do that add the line :
Option "NoDRI"
to the "Device" section of you xorg.conf, then reboot or restart X.

(please not I had no "UseFBDev" option in mine ; you may try w/o it ?)


You may not get full speed afa graphics are concerned, but at least your system should be functional.

Thanks. Your advice worked and xserver is back to life. You said rightly that the full potential of the graphics won't be reliased. I can also see difference in display, colours contrast etc.

Isn't there a way to get more out of my graphics card. Or will I be permanently limited in my use of graphic card as far as ubuntu is concerned. Isn't there a way out. Can I enable the restricted driver for my ATI card...will it work or flgrx driver is useless in my circumstances.

The card installed in my laptop is: ATI Technologies Inc M24 [Radeon Mobility X600]

I look forward to your and others for further possible solutions.
