Hi there.
I am trying to compile and install a "mainline" or "upstream" linux kernel to help me test whether this resolves a bug (https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/linux/+bug/292619). I am following these instructions: https://wiki.ubuntu.com/KernelTeam/GitKernelBuild.
However, at the stage of installing the linux-image I get the following error message:
Done.
dpkg: error processing linux-image-2.6.28-rc4-custom_2.6.28-rc4-custom-10.00.Custom_amd64.deb (--install):
failed in buffer_write(fd) (10, ret=-1): backend dpkg-deb during `./lib/modules/2.6.28-rc4-custom/kernel/drivers/video/hgafb.ko': No space left on device
dpkg-deb: subprocess paste killed by signal (Broken pipe)
Running postrm hook script /sbin/update-grub.
Searching for GRUB installation directory ... found: /boot/grub

Testing for an existing GRUB menu.lst file ... found: /boot/grub/menu.lst
Searching for splash image ... none found, skipping ...
Found kernel: /vmlinuz-2.6.27-7-server
Found kernel: /vmlinuz-2.6.27-7-generic
Found kernel: /vmlinuz-2.6.24-21-server
Found kernel: /memtest86+.bin
Updating /boot/grub/menu.lst ... done
Errors were encountered while processing:
linux-image-2.6.28-rc4-custom_2.6.28-rc4-custom-10.00.Custom_amd64.deb
Does anyone here know what device it is talking about when it says that there is no space and how I can fix the problem?
The linux-image...deb file is about 258M in size. The output of df -h is:
Filesystem Size Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/md1 950M 261M 642M 29% /
tmpfs 1.9G 0 1.9G 0% /lib/init/rw

Thanks. Paul
