Upgrade to 7.10 froze up

Hello. I was using 7.04 on a Dell Inspirion 5100. I tried to upgrade to 7.10 using Update Manager and the process froze in the middle. I tried to restart but the screen remains blank. I does appear to be booting up because it plays the typical music. I think I can even log in (again I get the typical music) but the screen remains blank. Any ideas on what I should do? How can I find out why the upgrade didn't work. By the way, when it was still proceeding the process seemed EXTREMELY slow, much longer than it took to initially install Linux after giving up on Windows.
