View Full Version : [ubuntu] Problem with Firefox since upgrading from 8.04 to 8.10

I decided to upgrade from 8.04 to 8.10 this weekend. Everything went well, however Firefox will not open videos from web pages. I get the following error:

/tmp/videofile.wmv could not be opened, because an unknown error occurred.

Try saving to disk first and then opening the file.

I have tried changing the file associations in Firefox and also globally. I removed VLC my default player and changing default to Totem, no change. Re-installed VLC... no change.

Any ideas?

Is it all videos (flash etc) or just certain filetypes (like the .wmv you mentioned)?

It may be possible that you've lost/corrupted a codec or two.

Flash videos work fine, like youtube etc. Just .wmv .avi .mpg will not open in VLC or anything for that matter. If I download them and click on them they work fine.
