Reading through the release notes for Linux Mint 6 RC1 (http://www.linuxmint.com/rel_felicia_whatsnew.php) gave me a laugh when I came to the section on Mint Nanny.

Family computer? Don't let the kiddies see dodgy domains.....

I introduced my Father to Linux with Mint 5, he now runs Intrepid.:D But I am seriously considering jumping the good ship Ubuntu and going with Mint 6. I am starting to believe that it is Mint that could hold the keys to breaking Linux onto the mainstream desktop.

Mint won't be as successful as Ubuntu, as if it becomes successful, it will have hell to pay for due to all of the patented codecs it installs out of the box without a license.

It has become almost as successful already in just couple of short years. They are not doing anything illegal. There is a free version if your worried about using them in your country.

If I own a Mac and a copy of Vista, haven't I already paid for those codecs? Is it legal to then use them on Linux in the U.S. or are they only allowed to be used on those platforms that I paid for?

mint IS ubuntu. Therefore, its ubuntu that is going to go 'mainstream' as you claim.

and also yeah, dodgy legal issues with the codecs. Its not illegal as there is no law specifically stating anything , but they could very easily be sued by the respective companies if they feel that mint is hurting them.

and yes i believe the licenses only work for the platform your on, so it only works in windows, mac, etc

Finally someone clarifies. It's just Ubuntu with a different name and their own useful apps. I do think mintNanny, mintBackup, mintMenu, and such are very handy tools. Mint is ideal for people switching from Windows, although, I switched my friend from Windows to Jaunty and installed mintMenu in it, and she is lovin' her Ubuntu! Updating her iPod and everything.

(I was doing some archive reading.)

My, my. How time changes things.

mint IS ubuntu.

Actually Mint has not evolved as Ubuntu. It did initially sprout from Ubuntu, however Linux Mint now also has distributions that offshoot from Debian directly, just as Ubuntu does. They also are taking several different roads in regards to desktop environments.

The game has changed with the development of Unity and Gnome 3. If you look around you'll find that more and more distribution developers are looking for alternatives because many users are looking for something other than the current mainstream distros, desktops and their current alternatives.

Such is the way and the freedom of open source and we all benefit from it, either by increased development of our current product, other current products, or the establishment of new contenders and alternate ideas.
